🚨 Safety Updates

Safe Work Australia’s mid-term review of the National Return to Work Strategy 2020–2030 found it effective in guiding collaboration and research but noted limited improvement in return-to-work outcomes. Despite mixed data and COVID-19 impacts, the Strategy remains fit-for-purpose, with stakeholders supporting its continued use to drive national progress.

2 Types Constructions Pty Ltd has been convicted and fined $270,000 in the District Court of NSW as a result of a prosecution by SafeWork NSW The proceedings arose following a workplace incident on 19 April 2022, when a worker fell about four metres through an unprotected skylight.

The Minns Labor Government is taking another important step to protect workers against dust diseases, by strengthening the safety code of practice for tunnel construction. Tunnelling can be a vital part of building public transport infrastructure yet poses risks to workers including silica dust exposure.

Queensland’s CFMEU inquiry will proceed with public hearings from November 18 despite the resignation of five senior staff, including senior counsel and secretary Bob Gee. Commissioner Stuart Wood, KC, confirmed new appointments are imminent, while unions demand transparency over the departures and concerns about the inquiry’s internal operations persist.

Tradies, contractors and builders will be the first to be given access to digital industry licences in Queensland, the Government has today announced. Over the past few months, more than 105,000 tradies have been given access to nine Queensland Building and Construction Commission licences.

Populous and Stewart Architecture have been appointed to deliver the reference design and design brief for the most significant update of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra since it opened in 1981, more than four decades ago.

NSW

NSW Premier Chris Minns has broken ground on Dawn, Stage 5 of Sekisui House Australia’s $5 billion Melrose Park project. Developed with Hankyu Hanshin Properties and built by Decode, Dawn will deliver 368 park-side homes, supporting housing supply, jobs, and sustainability within one of NSW’s largest urban renewal communities.

QLD

Sunshine Coast Council has launched an AI-powered Development Assistant to help residents access instant, tailored planning advice anytime. The tool guides users through development requirements for projects like sheds, granny flats, or renovations, improving accessibility and confidence. Delivered by myLot, it’s supported by the Australian Government’s Housing Support Program.

A $2 billion Design and Construct contract has been awarded to Gateway Connect Joint Venture (CPB, BMD, Georgiou, GHD, BG&E) for Brisbane’s Gateway to Bruce Upgrade. The project will ease congestion, improve safety, and add lanes between Bracken Ridge and Pine River, jointly funded by federal and Queensland governments.

The Crisafulli Government has streamlined approvals for Queensland dam, weir, and culvert projects, removing development applications for over 90% of works. The reforms cut costs and timelines while protecting native species, simplify fish passage rules, and provide technical support to councils, boosting regional water infrastructure and resilience.

TAS

The Tasmanian Government will vote next month on the new AFL stadium going ahead in what will be a crucial turning point in the future of the state’s proposed footy team. However, if that stadium plan falls over, a private investment group is pushing an alternative proposal they claim is superior in every way.

Akaysha Energy, the BlackRock-backed battery energy storage systems player, will plough ahead with construction of its Elaine BESS project in Victoria after securing $460 million in project financing.

The Victorian government has announced a ten-year plan that would see more than 5,800 hectares of greenfield sites across Melbourne and regional Victoria transformed into industrial land.

WA

Heavy lift drones have been used to string power lines over the culturally sensitive Bingham River near Collie, minimising environmental impact and disruption. Conducted by GenusPlus Group and Sensr Solutions for Western Power, the innovation improves safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional helicopter methods while supporting sustainable infrastructure delivery.

Built’s revenue jumped more than 50 per cent to $3.1 billion and comprehensive earnings nearly doubled to $60.2 million in a year in which the company boosted its workbook with health and defence projects, financial documents filed with corporate regulator ASIC show.

ClearVue Technologies has signed a license partnership with South Korean glass producer Kukyoung Glass and Metal Co. to embed ClearVue’s solar facade tech into buildings.

Australian construction firm Boral successfully tests concrete that captures air pollution and stores it for good by using waste gases from a cement plant to treat recycled concrete pieces. Boral's innovative process takes advantage of concrete's natural ability to absorb carbon over its lifespan, managing conditions to speed up absorption and using carbon-filled materials in new building projects. Boral's CEO Vik Bansal believes the successful trial results of recarbonated concrete aggregates show promise for decarbonising the cement and concrete industry, with the company aiming for zero net emissions by 2050.

The global construction industry is accelerating efforts to adopt humanoid robots as it grapples with a persistent productivity slump and ongoing labour shortages, according to a new report from McKinsey & Company.

Spain’s Ferrovial has acquired fellow Spanish company Powernet, a telecommunications and systems engineer for an unspecified sum, in order to boost its profile in the data centre construction market. The acquisition aims to improve Ferrovial’s design, development, operation and maintenance of data centres within its construction division.

Italian State Railways (FS) will invest €20 billion over 10 years to digitalise its network, focusing on full ERTMS rollout across infrastructure and rolling stock. The plan targets 100% of TEN-T core lines, equipping Trenitalia’s 2,000 trains by 2030 and FS Logistix’s 700 locomotives by 2033, enhancing reliability and efficiency.
