THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

🚨 Safety Updates

Silica dust, now seen as the new asbestos, poses serious health risks in construction and industry. Traditional cleaning methods often worsen exposure. Tennant’s HEPA-filtered sweepers effectively capture harmful particles, supporting compliance with evolving regulations. Proactive prevention using advanced equipment ensures safer workplaces and better long-term health outcomes for workers.

✒ Headlines & Industry

From 17 November 2025, only Australian businesses can tender for federal construction contracts under $7.5 million—a move welcomed by Master Builders Australia. CEO Denita Wawn says this reform supports SMEs, boosts local economies, and ensures fairer, clearer procurement processes amid industry challenges like cost spikes and labour shortages.

Expressions of interest for Brisbane 2032 Olympics procurement contracts have opened, with small, medium and large businesses across Australia getting access to a “once in a generation” business and infrastructure development opportunity.

🏗️ Projects

NSW

A $2.2 billion State Significant Development has been proposed for Sydney’s Inner West, transforming 3.14 hectares into Concord Central—a mixed-use urban village with 1,336 dwellings, retail, open space, and community facilities. Located next to Concord West station, it aligns with housing targets and transport-oriented development principles.

Early works have begun on a $60 million Pacific Highway interchange upgrade at Harrington and Coopernook roads. Jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments, the project includes an overpass to improve safety, eliminate right turns, and stabilise soft soil through preloading. Major construction is scheduled to begin in 2027.

A further 18 projects have been declared as State Significant Development (SSD) following recommendations from the Housing Delivery Authority (HDA), the NSW Government has announced. To date, 279 proposals amounting to more than 96,000 potential homes have been declared State significant.

SA

Major construction is advancing on Adelaide’s $15 billion Torrens to Darlington project, with tunnel boring machines arriving and assembly underway. Cranes, roadworks, and earthworks signal progress on South Australia’s largest infrastructure project. The initiative will remove 21 traffic lights, ease congestion, and create thousands of jobs, transforming state-wide connectivity.

VIC

Major construction has begun at the Suburban Rail Loop’s Burwood station, with tunnelling works set to start in 2025. The station will connect Deakin University to the rail network for the first time, slash travel times, integrate with local transport, and support thousands of jobs and new homes across Melbourne.

Construction of the Suburban Rail Loop is advancing, with Place Alliance selected as the preferred bidder to build three new underground stations at Glen Waverley, Burwood, and Box Hill. The works will feature sustainable, accessible designs and support thousands of local construction jobs, reinforcing Victoria’s major transport infrastructure pipeline.

Critical water infrastructure upgrades are underway in Pakenham East, with 12km of pipe works—including drinking water, recycled water, and sewer mains—being delivered by South East Water and partners ABK (Abergeldie, BMD, KBR). Supporting 7,000 new homes, the $2.1 billion program runs to mid-2026, ensuring water security in Melbourne’s growing southeast.

WA

Expressions of interest are open for WA’s A$700 million Kwinana Freeway upgrade, targeting congestion relief by adding lanes and improving traffic flow. Starting early 2027, this critical project supports freight, local industry, and future port developments. Design and construction firms are invited to join the formal tender process.

🧰 Construction Au Other

Acubis has officially launched FieldLink Mobile Communications Trailer (MCT), a rugged, solar-powered unit designed to bring fast, reliable connectivity to the most demanding environments across Australia’s mining and infrastructure sectors.

The Queensland Government says the state’s councils and their communities will be better equipped to navigate nation-leading renewable energy planning reforms with the launch of a new Social Licence in Renewable Energy Toolkit. The toolkit will help local governments to navigate the renewable energy sector by providing guidance on managing social impacts and securing long-term benefits, with tools, templates and checklists to support planning, approvals, community engagement and benefit-sharing.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Hitachi Construction Machinery signed a five-year agreement with Rio Tinto’s Technological Resources to develop remote operation and partial autonomy for ultra-large hydraulic excavators. The partnership targets an interoperable platform by 2030, enhancing mining efficiency and safety at Pilbara sites through operator-assist and autonomous technologies.

The Construction Startup Competition 2025 has just revealed its 13 winners, representing the next generation of construction technology innovators from around the globe.

A study reveals that blending waste tire rubber with pumice in geopolymer concrete improves impact resistance and sustainability. Optimal mixes with 5% pumice and 10% rubber reduce density, enhance energy absorption, and offer a lightweight, eco-friendly building material ideal for non-load-bearing applications, advancing greener construction solutions.

A new startup company hopes to assist 3DCP companies by generating concrete formulations.

Associated Builders and Contractors today released its fifth annual construction technology report, the ABC Field Tech Report, which highlights the tools and innovations shaping project sites, showcasing the possibilities and opportunities when technology transforms construction in the field.

🌏 Around the World

Channeline’s GRP technology enabled trenchless rehabilitation of a 5.3m-diameter sewer in Detroit. Supplied in 2021, custom four-piece liners were engineered for severe loads and tight curves. Installed by Marra Services with robotic assistance from Kelley Engineering, 1,500ft was relined at four liners per day—demonstrating efficient, corrosion-resistant infrastructure renewal.

A 179 MW solar farm and 100 MW / 200 MWh battery energy storage project planned for the North Island of New Zealand has won approval from an independent panel, with a commercial decision now able to take place if the project remains viable in light of conditions applied to the build and operation.

China’s Mingyang unveiled the world’s largest 50 MW floating offshore wind turbine concept in October 2025. Featuring dual 25 MW rotors, a 290m diameter, and a 39,000-tonne platform, it aims to cut costs and boost deep-sea wind capacity, supporting China’s 2060 carbon-neutral goals and offshore wind expansion by 2030.

📖 Miscellaneous

Of the 2m flood-prone houses across the country, at least 70% have had values reduced, a new report by Climate Council and PropTrack has found.

A "climate trigger" that could be used to block coal and gas projects has been formally excluded from the government's overhaul of Australia's environment laws, minister Murray Watt confirms.

Industry experts warn – despite improvements – Australia will fail to meet its housing targets if skills shortages and regulatory barriers are not addressed.
