THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

🚨 Safety Updates

Bridgeworks (Aust) Pty Ltd has been fined $150,000 in the Industrial Court of NSW as a result of a prosecution by SafeWork NSW. The proceedings arose following a workplace incident on 11 November 2022 where a worker fell nearly 3.85 metres from a bridge abutment.

Review controls for safety: every job, every day in National Safe Work Month and beyond

In National Safe Work Month’s final week, focus on reviewing safety controls to ensure risks are effectively managed. Update risk registers, check WHS regulator events, and plan SafeTea activities. Ongoing review is essential—safety should remain a priority in every job, every day, beyond the campaign.

âś’ Headlines & Industry

Coalition criticises CFMEU administrator and urges deregistration; Albanese raises South China Sea jet incident with China’s premier. Shadow Environment Minister reviews Labor’s environmental reforms, while Multicultural Affairs Minister Aly highlights government action on child safety, immigration issues, and China trade relations.

Master Builders warns that CFMEU’s administration alone cannot fix systemic corruption in construction. The industry faces criminality, intimidation, and cartel risks, requiring government action, cross-jurisdictional police taskforces, and strict enforcement of competition laws to restore integrity, protect workers, and ensure a safe, accountable building sector.

The Coalition will push for a Senate inquiry into the CFMEU’s administration after serious misconduct concerns. Allegations include criminal infiltration, abandoned anti-corruption teams, and a lawyer quitting the investigation. Liberal senator Maria Kovacic and opposition spokesman Tim Wilson call for parliamentary scrutiny, accusing the government of allowing corruption to continue. The CFMEU’s bid to overturn its administration was dismissed by the High Court.

🏗️ Projects

ACT

Scentre Group proposes a 22-year, $21 billion redevelopment of Westfield Woden: 17 towers, including one 55-storey, 4,000 homes, and ~8,000 residents. The plan integrates retail, entertainment, and community facilities, aligning with ACT housing policy and light rail nodes. Early stages (2030–2036) will deliver social infrastructure. The masterplan aims to create a sustainable, high-density urban precinct while boosting jobs, government revenue, and long-term housing supply. Planning control changes, especially building heights, are required.

NSW

NSW is fast-tracking $298,239 for a regional pothole and road repair blitz on the Central Coast, part of $1.25 billion in 2025 regional road funding. In 2024/25, 184,000 potholes were filled statewide. Combined with $147 million in council block grants, the investment boosts road safety and reliability across NSW.

NSW unveils a $140 million biodiversity offsets package to support renewable energy zone construction, starting with a $27 million deal for 14,000 credits in the Central-West Orana REZ. Strategic Offset Delivery Agreements (SODAs) let landowners fund conservation while offsetting environmental impacts from wind farms, transmission lines, and other infrastructure projects.

Abadeen has secured DA approval for its ultra-luxury Mosman project at 34 Burran Avenue, with construction starting early 2026. The 550 sqm corner site, 50 m from Balmoral Beach, will host three whole-floor residences with panoramic Sydney Harbour views. Platform Architects leads design, Mathieson interiors, and Reform Projects manages delivery. The project combines contemporary architecture with contextual sensitivity, indoor-outdoor living, and premium materials. Early interest from buyers is strong, with prices expected above $20 million. Demolition and site works are scheduled for early 2026.

SA

Adelaide's skyline will be "sent soaring" by changes to building height rules that will make it easier for developers to add extra storeys to CBD construction projects, the SA government says.

TAS

The $2 billion Cellars Hill wind and Weasel solar farms in Tasmania will deliver 600 MW of renewable energy. Cellars Hill (350 MW) includes battery storage, Weasel solar (250 MW). Projects, led by Gamuda with local partners, create hundreds of construction jobs and offer nearby households energy rebates, with build starting 2026–28.

VIC

Australian solar developer, BNRG Leeson, has submitted plans for a 440MW solar PV facility in Victoria's Campaspe Shire to Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.

Boral proposes a 12.5 ha Montrose Quarry expansion, adding 30 years of construction material supply. The quarry, key to Melbourne’s infrastructure projects, would provide 20 million tonnes of raw materials. Plans include intersection upgrades for safety, supporting future housing and infrastructure demand as Victoria’s population grows toward 10 million by 2050.

GemLife’s $20 million New Gisborne project combines heritage restoration and new construction for over-50s living. The build includes renovating the 1908 Westport Homestead, constructing two contemporary Country Club buildings with gym, pool, and cinema, and developing low-maintenance homes using energy-efficient materials, weatherboard cladding, and pitched metal roofs.

Victorian distributors CitiPower, Powercor, and United Energy will run a $1.2 million kerbside EV charging trial until 2031, including at least 5% vehicle-to-grid chargers. The AER-approved trial will test demand management, voltage stability, and network efficiency, with CPU owning chargers and no cost to customers, supporting future grid and EV infrastructure planning.

🧰 Construction Au Other

Working with spatial designer and Country-Centred designer Danièle Hromek, the Australian Institute of Architects’ First Nations Advisory Committee (FNAC) has released two new guides to support architects and built environment professionals in their understanding of, and engagement with, First Nations.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Construction ecommerce is rapidly reshaping B2B sales, as buyers demand Amazon-like online experiences. Platforms like Shopify B2B enable complex orders, product configurators, ERP integration, and self-service portals. Selling parts, consumables, and advanced materials online boosts efficiency, aftermarket revenue, and DTC opportunities, helping construction businesses modernize, scale, and meet evolving buyer expectations.

BIM is evolving from a design-focused tool to a data-driven backbone for AI and workflow automation. While geometric models remain vital for visualization, AR, and on-site coordination, the future lies in “minimum viable data” linked to broader data ecosystems. APIs, open standards, and protocols like MCP and A2A enable AI agents to access, analyze, and act on BIM information, supporting procurement, scheduling, and lifecycle management—shifting BIM from modeling to management in the construction industry.

Kojo has raised a $10M Series C extension from Wesco to advance its AI-driven construction procurement platform, integrating real-time materials tracking, automated workflows, and supply chain visibility for contractors across the US and Canada.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

A collaboration between RMIT University and Bristile Roofing has produced new sustainable roof tiles made with coal ash and recycled glass, cutting COâ‚‚ emissions by 13% compared with traditional concrete tiles. The full-scale manufacturing trials at Bristile Roofing’s Melbourne factory produced hundreds of the concrete tiles incorporating ash waste from coal-fired power stations and glass – two challenging waste streams – delivering both environmental and engineering benefits.

đź“– Miscellaneous

CFMEU administrator Mark Irving says substantial progress has been made in reforming the union, but “much important work remains.” He highlights ongoing efforts to dismantle corruption-linked business models, protect members, and work with industry, regulators, and police, stressing that success will be judged over time.

Geoscience Australia’s AECR 2025 report highlights Australia’s strategic energy role, with exports covering 80% of production. While fossil fuels remain strong, low-carbon technologies like carbon capture and hydrogen are growing. Productivity gains and clean-energy projects position Australia to maintain global energy security and economic value amid the energy transition.
