Queensland is facing an infrastructure crisis threatening the 2032 Olympics, with a critical lack of housing to accommodate a shortfall of up to 55,000 workers needed for the Games.A property technology leader has warned Brisbaneâs failure to adopt rapid building threatens the viability of the Games, as latest data from Infrastructure Australia forecast a catastrophic shortage of more than 50,000 construction workers when games-related infrastructure begins in earnest next year, peaking at almost 55,000 by March 2026.
The 2025 Australian Infrastructure Investment Monitor reports Australia as the top global infrastructure investment destination, driven by renewable energy and data centre opportunities. Investor confidence is high, but challenges remain in red tape, labour, industrial relations, and regulatory frameworks. Energy assets, especially grid storage and firming, dominate investment preferences.ntersectional Gender Pay Gap Dashboard
The Intersectional Gender Pay Gap Dashboard shows construction managers earn a median $100,910 for females versus $117,350 for males, a 14% gap, reflecting WAâs male-dominated construction sector. Engineering and production managers show similar disparities. The dashboard enables detailed analysis across age, cohort, and ethnicity to address gender pay inequities in construction.
đď¸ Projects
NSW
Homes NSW is seeking developers and builders for three major Sydney housing redevelopments in Hillsdale, Pagewood, and Sylvania, part of the $6.6 billion Building Homes for NSW program. Over 800 dwellings, including social and private homes, will replace ageing properties. Proposals close 8 December 2025 via the NSW procurement portal.
The Australian and NSW Governments have unveiled early designs for Stage 2 of the $1 billion Mamre Road upgrade, a critical project aimed at improving freight flow and road safety across Western Sydneyâs fast-growing logistics belt.
QLD
Bates Smart and Richards and Spenceâs proposal for a three-tower development for Aria Property Group in South Brisbane has been greenlit for development by Brisbane City Council. According to Bates Smart director Mathieu le Sueur, it is the first project to be approved under Brisbane City Councilâs new height limits for the suburb.
The Queensland Government has approved $9.6 million in the $12.5 million Scheme Supply Fund to help councils deliver housing projects faster. Approved councils include Balonne, Goondiwindi, Napranum, and others. Funding supports planning reform, removes development barriers, and accelerates construction, aiming to meet Queenslandâs target of one million homes by 2044.
Transgrid and Endeavour Energy have partnered to develop a new electricity infrastructure project designed to power the priority growth areas of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis in Australia.
Queensland Rail has started a large-scale sleeper replacement project along the South West rail line to modernize infrastructure and boost regional freight reliability across Toowoomba, Warwick, and Thallon.
SA
Kangaroo Islandâs Cape Willoughby Conservation Park will receive a $5 million upgrade, including a visitor centre, cafĂŠ, tours, trails, signage, and extra parking. South Australian architects Cumulus Studio and builders Kauppila will deliver the project, starting October 2025 and completing by June 2026, enhancing tourism and access to the 174-year-old operational lighthouse.

VIC
The Victorian Government will remove Armstrongs Road and Station Street level crossings in Seaford, building rail bridges and a new elevated Seaford Station. The project, starting 2027 with completion in 2029, aims to boost safety, ease congestion, improve accessibility, and create community spaces, making the Frankston Line fully level crossing free.
Work is set to begin on Castlemaineâs $12.4 million Frederick Street Precinct Project, revitalising Frederick Street and Mechanics Lane with upgraded pedestrian and cycling access, improved safety, greening, buried powerlines, public art, and event spaces. Funded by the Australian Government and Mount Alexander Shire, construction starts February 2026, completing by March 2027.
Virtual and augmented reality are transforming construction training in Australia. Apprentices safely practice high-risk tasks, gain confidence, and improve skills using immersive simulations. Companies like Next World, Viewport XR, and TAFE Queensland provide scalable, interactive, and data-driven VR/AR platforms that complement hands-on learning while enhancing safety, engagement, and retention.
WA
Tilt Renewables is set to revive Australiaâs stalled wind sector with PPAs for its 108 MW Waddi (WA) and 275 MW Palmer (SA) projects, supported by a $2.25 billion refinancing. Construction aims for 2028, creating 150+ jobs and $3.9 million community benefits, marking a major milestone in the nationâs renewable energy transition.
đ Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology
Matrakâs app lets Australian procurers track the carbon footprint of Chinese building materials in real time, supporting low-carbon sourcing. Partnering with the China Building Materials Federation, it highlights innovations like low-carbon cement, aluminium facades, and prefab buildings, helping Australia access decarbonised materials and reduce embodied carbon in construction.

Advances in AI and robotics make them a âpotentially transformative solution.â Early collaboration with robotics firms can help contractors build roadmaps, preparing the industry for future integration of humanoid technology.
AI automation is transforming construction by streamlining documentation, testing, and scheduling. Success depends on gradual integration, human oversight, and agile practices. Pilots, clear boundaries, and data governance ensure AI accelerates productivity without disrupting live projects. When implemented carefully, AI enhances decision-making, reduces rework, and supports operational continuity.
đą Sustainability â& Environment
The NSW Government has released the first Waste and Circular Infrastructure Plan to prevent landfill shortages by 2030. It introduces streamlined planning for new facilities, advisory support, and updates to energy-from-waste frameworks. Modern technologies like pyrolysis and TDF are highlighted, enabling safer recycling options while maintaining environmental safeguards.
Australiaâs 25-year-old environmental laws are being reformed to address biodiversity loss. Proposed changes include a federal EPA, recognition of unacceptable impacts, and regional planning. However, ministerial discretion, reliance on offsets, and limited climate consideration leave key weaknesses. Success will depend on implementation and political support.
